Main lines of research

The main objective of the neurology group is the study of a number of highly prevalent pathologies of the CNS using molecular genetics approaches and animal models, and the study of rare diseases corresponding to each disease group. The aim is to further our understanding of the pathophysiology of diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and genetically-based epilepsy (common forms and rare forms, such as Lafora disease), and to generate diagnostic and therapeutic tools that improve the assistance offered to patients affected by these diseases. Genetics of Epilepsy

The main objective of the Genetics of Epilepsy laboratory is the identification and characterization of genes involved in focal and generalized familial genetic epilepsies and rare forms of epilepsy, in order to generate diagnostic and therapeutic tools that improve the care of patients affected by these diseases.

Since 2009 the group has led the GEGEI initiative (Spanish Group of the genetics of childhood epilepsies; www.gegei.es), which focuses on the identification of rare monogenic familial epilepsies and childhood epileptic encephalopathies.

Animal models of diseases associated with epilepsy

This line of research focuses on the study of certain neurological and neurodevelopmental diseases associated with epilepsy and attempts to develop treatments that can prevent or delay the onset of seizures and neurological impairment in experimental models of these diseases. The animal models currently used are 2 knockout mouse models of Lafora disease (Epm2a-/- and Epm2b-/- mice); a transgenic mouse line (a model of cardiofaciocutaneous [CFC] syndrome) that overexpress a constitutively active mutated form of B-RAF kinase (B-Raf+/ LSLV600E mice); and a mouse model of mental retardation, autosomal dominant 7, with Dyrk1a gene haploinsufficiency.

Genetics of Dementias

The main objective of this line of research is to follow a cohort of cases with familial degenerative dementia and cases with presenile dementia with recent onset in order to correlate well-characterized clinical phenotypes with biological and genetic markers for diagnostic and research purposes. Furthermore, recruitment has begun of nonagenarians with well-preserved cognitive function in order to identify a panel of genetic polymorphisms with protective effects against age-associated cognitive decline.

Neuropharmacology of movement disorders

This line of research is focused on the study of identified and potential treatments, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological (including functional surgery), for movement disorders (Parkinson´s, dystonia, chorea, tremors, tics, spasticity, etc.). This is an area that has expanded greatly in the last 20 years, enabling the treatment of diseases considered very difficult to control, such as advanced Parkinson's disease and generalized dystonia.
