Activity summary
The prevention, study, diagnosis, treatment and development of new techniques, procedures and devices for treating diseases of the heart, pericardium, great vessels and peripheral vascular system. More specifically, the study and surgical treatment of pathologies affecting the heart, pericardium and large thoracic vessels; acquired and congenital heart diseases with adult expression; coronary, valvular and thoracic aortic conditions; as well as endovascular treatment of thoracic or abdominal aneurysms, lower or upper limb ischemia and carotid pathology, among others.
Contributions to society
Thanks to the development of new techniques and treatments, its aim is to help improve the quality of life of patients with cardiovascular disease by implementing safer, more effective and less invasive surgical procedures.
In addition, it carried out continuous training and specialisation in the field of cardiac and vascular surgery, which translates into better medical care for patients in general. In this regard, the following teaching activities were carried out in 2023:
- Conformability and control in treating thoracic and abdominal aorta 27-28 September 2023 at the FJD. Organised by GORE. Professors: César Aparicio Martínez. Alejandro González García.
- Advanced hybrid workshop on distal and ultradistal dissection in a Thiel cadaver. UAM, January 2023, Madrid. Organiser: Dr. Arribas. Professor: Alejandro González García.
- TXTHIEL2023 Course - 11th edition - Kidney transplantation: technique and fundamentals of extraction surgery, bench preparation and kidney transplantation on a preserved cadaver according to the W. Thiel technique and simulators. UAM. 06 and 07/03/2023. Organiser: Dr. Arribas. Professor: Alejandro González García.
- Course-Workshop: Retrograde puncture with ultrasound control in a Thiel cadaver. UAM. 30/03/2023. Organiser: Dr. Arribas. Professor: Alejandro González García.
- Public workshop ‘Diabetic foot care’ - HIE 16/11/23. Organiser: Maria Teresa Rodriguez Bustabad. Speaker: Patricia Torres Lebruno. Speaker: Virginia Plaza.
Collaborations
engineers and other health professionals to improve the efficacy and safety of surgical interventions in the cardiovascular area.
Ongoing projects:
- Collaborators in the NOMA study: Multi-center, randomised dose-finding clinical trial with parallel-groups and placebo controlled to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intramuscular administration of allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal cells in diabetic patients with critical lower limb ischemia without the possibility of revascularisation. Led by Dr. García Olmo. Collaborators: C. Aparicio and A. González.
- Collaborators in the PLIANT II Registry on the results of the iliac branches. César Aparicio Martínez, Alejandro González García and Ana Arribas Díaz.
- Best Utility Model Award, category YOUNG INVENTOR 2023, granted by the SPTO to Ciro Baeza Bermejillo, for the utility model U202032664: Fenestrated stent for artery repair, equipped with fenestration positioning guide.
Furthermore, the group collaborates with professionals from other medical institutions and academic centers to share knowledge and resources, contributing to global progress in the field of cardiac and vascular surgery: César Aparicio Martínez: Associate Professor of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Complutense de Madrid University; Tomás Bolívar Gómez: Associate Professor of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Rey Juan Carlos University; Gala Fernández Martín Forero: Associate Professor of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Alfonso X El Sabio University; Ciro Baeza Bermejillo: Professor of Anatomy at the FJD School of Nursing (UAM); Alejandro González García: Collaborating professor of surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense de Madrid University; Ana Begoña Arribas Díaz: Collaborating professor of surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense de Madrid University; Ciro Baeza Bermejillo: Collaborating professor of surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense de Madrid University.
