Gender perspective

Activity summary

Through numerous projects of varying types, the Urology Department's research focuses on developing new surgical procedures, drugs and medical devices applied to urological oncology and benign urogenital pathology. We explore the application of regenerative medicine in functional urology and andrology, and of genetic and immunohistochemical analyses to identify biomarkers in urological cancers.

Contributions to society

Our participation in clinical and translational research projects allows us to drive innovation in new products, drugs and surgical techniques. We apply this knowledge to medical practice and provide accurate and personalised medical care in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases. We actively participate in international initiatives to share knowledge and medical technology, thus strengthening our contribution to society.

Collaborations

We seek out active projects, develop new lines of research and increase our collaborative network to improve our knowledge of genitourinary disorders and improve healthcare for our patients.

We currently collaborate with independent researchers, research groups, universities and scientific societies, such as:

• The Advanced Therapies Group of the IIS-FJD in developing innovative therapies for urological pathologies such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction with two research projects in the field of regenerative medicine.
• The Spanish Association of Urology (AEU). Through the AEU’s Research Platform for Multi-center Studies, we are sponsors of the national registry of ‘Adjustable sling treatment for male post-surgical stress urinary incontinence in Spain’, and collaborating researchers in several uro-oncology research projects.
• The Foundation for Urology Research (FIU) in a clinical study aimed at treating high-risk non-muscle infiltrating bladder tumours with IMUNO BCG Moreau RJ as prophylaxis for recurrence and progression.
• European Uro-Oncology Group (EUOG): We are participating in a Phase II, non-commercial clinical trial on the management of urothelial carcinoma of the upper urinary tract.
• UNICANCER, Health Cooperative Group (Groupement de Coopération Sanitaire-GCS) in the ALBAN clinical trial: An open label, randomised, phase III trial, evaluating efficacy of Atezolizumab in addition to one year BCG (Bacillus CaLmette- Guerin) bladder instillation in BCG-naïve patients with high-risk non-muscle invasive Bladder cancer
• The ALIANZA VHL (Spanish von Hippel-Lindau Family Association). We collaborate with the donation of renal tumour primary cell cultures for the search of biomarkers in patients with von Hippel-Lindau disease.
• The Latin American Renal Cancer Group (LARCG): We collaborate on an international registry of renal tumours.
• The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Faculty of Medicine, UAM: since 2008 we have participated in several research projects (4) related to the surgically donated adrenal gland, two of which have been funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness over the last ten years.

The Urology Area also collaborates with HUFJD’s Oncology and Nephrology Area in the donation of samples for the following studies and research projects:

• Study: Multi Omics Data Cancer Diagnostics Therapies (TITANIA Study)
• Study: FJD-ENBIBA: EUROPEAN NEPHRECTOMY BIO-BANK.
